Get involved in Berwick’s 900-year party!
06 October 2013
Berwick's 900th birthday is just over a year away. And the group organising the town's year-long celebrations is keen to involve as many people as possible.
A public meeting to launch Berwick 900 will take place on Wednesday, November 6 in the Town Hall. "In 2015 Berwick is going to tell - and celebrate - its 900-year story. It's a celebration for everyone who lives in and around Berwick, so we're aiming to engage as many organisations and individuals as we can." says Derek Sharman, who chairs the organising committee.
"We're putting together a framework of events, but at this stage nothing is set in stone. The purpose of the meeting is to get people thinking about how they can be part of it. And we want to encourage local organisations to build Berwick 900 into their plans for 2015."
Berwick 900 is an opportunity to have fun and to take pride in our town, says committee member Joe Lang. "And it also has a commercial and economic purpose. We want to attract visitors to the town - not only in 2015, but longer term, by raising awareness of Berwick's history and heritage throughout the UK and internationally."
The meeting will suggest how organisations, local businesses and individuals can help shape Berwick 900 and make it a success. "We want to celebrate every aspect of the town's life and history," says Derek Sharman. "From fishing to farming, from guilds to garrisons and from arts to architecture. It's going to take a huge number of people to make it happen, and we'll need a huge number of skills. So if you love Berwick and want to be part of the biggest celebration for 900 years, come along to the Town Hall at 6.30pm on November 6!"
