Seats
The Town Council took on responsibility for over 300 public seats and benches from Northumberland County Council on 1 April 2012. However, County Council officers still assist in urgent removals or repairs where a seat is badly damaged or dangerous.
Despite the maintenance work carried out since 2012, the Town Council recognises there is a great deal of work to be done to bring all of the seats up to a reasonable standard. A record of every seat is now held on computer, together with an asset number which is located on the seat. Plans are being made for a phased refurbishment, beginning with investment of £30,000 in 2019-20.
If anyone sees a seat which they feel is in a very poor condition, please contact the Town Council by e-mail to info@berwick-tc.gov.uk, or telephone 01289 302391. As well as the location, the asset number of the bench would also be helpful. The asset tag is usually located on the rear of the bench.
If any individual or group wishes to adopt a seat by having a memorial plaque placed on the bench, they are welcome to do so, as long as the seat has not already been adopted. Adoption lasts for 10 years and includes maintenance of the seat for that period. The cost of this is in the order of £300. Please contact the Town Council for more details and up-to-date prices.
